It can be upsetting for anyone who suffers from Acne, knocking your confidence and can lead to negative feelings and even depression. But it is especially upsetting during your teenage years, where you feel awkward enough without your face breaking out with spots and blackheads.
The infographic below shows the common causes of Acne and why these factors cause acne. These being:
- Lack of Sleep
As a Teenager or Young Adult, the biggest cause of Acne are hormone changes during puberty, increasing sebum production which makes the skin oily. Coupled with teenagers not always being the cleanest species. Sweat, dirt, heavy makeup and a poor skincare routine, leads to clogged pores and the perfect breeding ground for acne causing bacteria.
Diet also plays and important role too. A diet high in sugar, dairy and unhealthy fats has been linked to acne due to increased inflammation, increases in insulin leading to hormonal changes and increased Candida yeast in the gut.
Over the counter products and treatments very rarely have the ability to improve acne. Most products do not contain the key ingredients required to treat acne. And by law they do not have the strength of ingredient needed to effectively treat acne.
Doctor or Dermatologist led treatments will normally include long term Antibiotics, or in severe cases, medication called Isotretinoin
Long term Antibiotics may cause antimicrobial resistance which could lead to more risk of infections. And Isotretinoin which is a high strength derivative of Vitamin A, has been known to have mood altering side effects which can lead to depression and has even been linked to teenage suicide.
Prescribed topical medications such as Benzol Peroxide, will help to kill the P. Acnes Bacteria which causes spots, as well as reduce sebum (oil) production. But this can have a very drying effect on the skin, leading to irritation, redness, flaking and soreness.
Many parents don’t like the thought of treating acne in this way due the side effects and possible risks associated with these medications. Seeking out alternative treatments to help ease the burden of Acne.
