5 Tips to Spring Clean you Skincare
A change in the seasons, especially from winter into spring always gets us thinking about our skincare routines and how we can achieve healthy glowing skin.
After months of cold, dry, windy weather and the central heating cranked up to Caribbean type temperatures, our skin has taken a beating.
Here’s our 5 top tips to help spring clean your skincare routine.
1. Great Skin Starts from Within
We’ve all heard “We are what we eat”? Well it really is true. Simple changes we can make to our diet can have a huge impact on our skin.
Did you know that sugar and refined carbohydrates such as fizzy pop, sweets, cake, sugary cereals, pastries etc. increase inflammation throughout your body?
Inflammation releases enzymes that actually break down collagen and elastin! Speeding up the ageing process and exacerbating skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and rosacea.
By tweaking our diets we can make a big impact on our skin. Simply cut down on sugary, processed foods, Pop, sweets, biscuits etc. and replace these with healthy whole foods such as nuts, seeds, vegetables, natural yogurt and fruit. Plus drink at least 2 litres of water per day. This will not only improve your waistline but it can make a real difference to your skin health.
Sugar is everywhere! Not just in obvious foods like cake, pop, sweets and chocolate. It’s hidden in products like ready meals, low fat yogurt, sauces, cereals, processed meats and salad dressings… the list is endless.
We recommend reading food labels on the food products you buy. Most supermarkets offer a traffic light colour system these days, highlighting sugar content. Recommended daily sugar intake is just 25 grams or 6 teaspoons.
2. Buff Away the Winter Blues
It is likely your skin is still suffering with the winter blues. Dry, rough, scaly, over heated and undernourished skin. Your skin is screaming out for a little bit of TLC.

3. Keeping Skincare Simple
Keep it simple with the skincare products you use and your daily cleansing routine. You don’t have to spend forever in the bathroom, a skin care routine takes less than a couple of minute’s morning and night.
We recommend the following for your skincare routine
- A foaming cleanser that has a mild AHA glycolic acid to slough away dead skin cells
- Always use a toner as this removes any traces of cleanser and dirt
- A serum – these contain tons of active ingredients and is made of very small molecules, so the skin absorbs them quickly and deeply
- Use a good quality moisturiser (If needed)
- Always wear a daily sunscreen of SPF 30
A good quality daytime serum containing Vitamin C will protect the skin from damaging free radicals and helps maintain collagen and elastin.
A night time serum containing Vitamin A or Retinol will speed up the natural exfoliation of dead skin cells for a fresher healthy glow.
4. Slather on the Sunscreen
Did you know that the sun’s rays break down collagen and are the major cause of premature ageing?
It’s really important to use a SPF all year round but even more so now that spring is upon us.
And you should just wait for the bright sunny days. The UV rays can damage your skin even in dull, grey days.
A good quality sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or above is the most important part in your skin care regime!

5. Spring Clean your Makeup Brushes
We get that cleaning your make up brushes isn’t at the top of your to do lists but it is very important in maintaining healthy skin.
Put it this way, why waste your time and money in looking after your skin only to apply your expensive foundation or eye shadow with dirty, minging brushes and sponges?
These tools are home for 1000’s of bacteria, dirt, dead skin cells among other stuff. Just think about all that dirt and oil that accumulates on those brushes and sponges, how bad that can be for your skin? Easy to see now why you’re getting break outs?
Skipping regular brush cleansing can lead to blocked pores, breakouts or worse; spreading infection around your face. Wash you’re brushes and replace your sponges at least once a month for health skin. We wash ours in an anti-bacterial wash and let them dry naturally.
