How To Treat A Mum Tum and Get Your Pre-Pregnancy Belly Back!

There’s nothing more frustrating than working hard to lose your pregnancy weight – only to still be plagued by the dreaded mum tum! But don’t despair – there are simple, easy and highly effective ways to get rid of your stubborn baby fat and get your pre-baby belly back again. In this post find out how to treat a mum tum and get your pre-pregnancy belly back!

Why Is Your Baby Belly So Stubborn?

Achieving a flat stomach can be challenging even before having a baby but after pregnancy, it can be even more frustrating.

You can be left with a baby pouch or some mums call it an apron. Whatever you call it, having stubborn fat and maybe some loose skin after giving birth can be really annoying and have a negative effect on your body confidence.

You see, your stomach is a natural “storehouse” for fat. When you are pregnant your body lays down more fat in these storehouses which also includes your stomach, thighs and hips. This is to make sure you have plenty of stored energy to feed and raise a healthy baby once it arrives. Unfortunately, once you have built up a storage of fat it can be very difficult to lose especially if you are unable to breastfeed.

There are several factors that influence a mum tum, these include:

Hormones

Pregnancy is the biggest transformation a woman body will ever experience. This puts a huge demand on your body and causes huge changes to your hormones as you grow another human inside of you.

After childbirth, it can take a good six months for your hormones to return to a pre-pregnancy level. During this time oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, oxytocin, prolactin, relaxin, insulin, cortisol and many more are trying to find their balance as your body recovers.

Our hormones have a huge effect on how our body uses or stores fat in. Some hormones help to increase fat burning whilst others can block weight loss and prevent fat burning.

Pregnancy can be really challenging on your thyroid gland and can lead to Hypothyroid which slows your metabolism and can lead to weight gain and fatigue.

Pregnancy also increases insulin resistance meaning your ability to use glucose effectively is reduced and this encourages the storage of excess energy in your fat cells.

Stress

When you are stressed, your body releases adrenalin and cortisol. These are normal hormonal responses and are needed to protect us.

The problem is, when we experience ongoing or chronic stress such as sleepless nights, looking after a new baby as well as your other children or work commitments these hormones can remain constantly elevated. This can turn off your ability to lose weight and burn off excess fat, it can even encourage your body to store fat as it increases insulin resistance.

Genetics

When we look at female family members we can often see similar physical traits in ourselves. So if your mum suffered from stubborn belly fat or a mum tum, then you might also struggle with this.

Our genes can also predispose how our body behaves, how it lays down fat or how fast our metabolism is.

Overweight Before Pregnancy

If you were overweight before pregnancy then it is highly likely that losing weight after pregnancy is going to need hard work and motivation.

How To Treat A Mum Tum At Home

So how can you shift your mum tum at home? Well, it really comes down to two things:

Clean Up Your Diet

When you’ve got young kids it can be hard to make your own diet a priority. By the time you’ve fed the baby or done the school run, cleaned up, cooked a meal, done the washing up and stopped any sibling meltdowns – you’ve no energy left to prepare yourself a healthy, weight-loss-friendly meal.

You grab a pizza or munch on the leftovers of your kid’s dinner. But that’s part of the problem when it comes to a stubborn mum tum – you’ve got to eat right if you want to shift it without any outside help!

The easiest way to eat well when you’re overworked and overwhelmed is to keep things simple. Cut out refined sugars and avoid carbs like white pasta, bread or cereals. Try to eat plenty of fresh vegetables, clean meats and fish.

For the best weight loss results, I encourage people to look at the Keto diet. It’s easy to do, doesn’t involve feeling hungry and can have some really quick results. Check out my blog post about it here to find out more…

NEAT And The Right Exercise

We all know that exercise is a great way to burn calories and aid weight loss, but when it comes to a mum tum it’s even more important! But with a newborn and sleepless nights, it can be super hard to muster the energy to exercise.

That’s where NEAT comes in. NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis and is the energy you use to perform all your daily tasks such as washing up, hoovering the floor, shopping and standing.

NEAT equates to 15-30% of your daily calorie output and the more active you are throughout your day the more calories you will use. In fact, the 60 minutes you might use in the gym is a really small percentage of your daily caloric spend.

My advice, get up, move around as often as you can. All ways take the stairs, put the baby in the buggy and get out in the fresh air and walk in the park. Standing, walking, housework etc all add up to your daily NEAT burn.  Get yourself a FitBit and start slowly increasing your steps, aiming to achieve 10,000 a day.

Improve Diastasis Recti

Part of the problem with a mum tum is that during pregnancy your stomach muscles had to stretch and in some women separate to accommodate your growing baby. This is known as Diastasis Recti and is very common, in fact around 60% of women experience this during their pregnancy.

During pregnancy, you were limited to the types of abdominal exercises you could safely do to help keep your muscles toned. And many women give up all exercise during pregnancy because they are too tired or worried about harming the baby. Postpartum, unless you have started gentle exercise since childbirth your abdominal will have lost strength and in some cases, the abdominals remain separated.

If your lower abdominals (think under your belly button) are weak, you can end up with a kind of pot-bellied appearance.

Some simple exercises can help to restore the strength of your core, flatten your stomach and help knit your abdominals back together.  Check out this YouTube video by Body Fit By Amy and learn how to heal your mum tum with these safe and simple exercises.

Treatments That Can Get Rid of Your Stubborn Mum Tum

Sometimes, diet and exercise aren’t enough. It might be that you just don’t have the time to dedicate to your weight loss routine. Or maybe you’ve worked hard but hit an annoying plateau and have some belly fat that just won’t shift. Or it might be that you just want to get faster results than diet and exercise alone can give you.

Thankfully, due to the revolutionary developments in body contouring over the last few decades, there are now plenty of treatments available that can help you get rid of your mum tum without going under the knife.

Fat Freezing (Cryolypolisis)

Fat freezing has become incredibly popular over the last decade with tons of women and celebrity mums all choosing it as a safer, less painful alternative to liposuction.

It’s non-surgical, meaning no scalpels, slicing or suction required! It’s safe and proven to be very effective at removing pockets of soft, squeezable body fat – such as your mum tum or love handles!

Fat Freezing works in an unusual way. By exposing your fat cells to cold temperatures we can destroy them, enabling your body to then remove them naturally through your lymphatic system.

Because the treatment is non-invasive, there’s no need for recovery time. You can continue with your normal schedule immediately after treatment – giving it a huge advantage over traditional liposuction!

As Cryolipolysis requires your body to naturally remove the dead fat cells, it can take a few weeks for the results to become fully visible – but the end result is well worth the wait! You’ll look slimmer, feel more confident and greatly improve your mum tum.

Ultrasound Cavitation

Another great non-surgical treatment for a mum tum is Ultrasound Cavitation. Similar to Fat Freezing, this treatment destroys unwanted fat cells so that your body can naturally remove them. The difference is that this groundbreaking fat reduction treatment uses ultrasonic waves instead of cold temperatures.

These ultrasonic waves generate vibrations that “shake” the fat cells until they can’t withstand it anymore. Your fat cells then start to break down and release the lipids (fats) from inside the cells into your system – ready to be burnt off as calories.

It’s completely pain-free and non-invasive, making it a popular choice for women looking to get rid of their stubborn, leftover pregnancy tum.

Again, similar to Fat Freezing, Ultrasound Cavitation is totally non-invasive so there’s no need to take any time to recover. No scarring, no painful recovery and no time off work required!

Some people see an immediate reduction in their mum tum following the first treatment but realistically you should expect to see the best results in the following 8-10 weeks.

Radio-frequency

For those of you with a mum tum consisting of excess body fat AND saggy, loose skin then our Exilis Elite treatment for you! The Exilis Elite uses Radio-frequency and Ultrasound to improve your mum tum. Not only is it clinically proven to destroy stubborn fat cells and creating a slimmer, more toned tummy – but it also tightens loose skin that can be caused by pregnancy. Rado frequency can improve the texture, tone and firmness of your skin at the same time!

This unique combination of benefits is thanks to its high-intensity ultrasound and radiofrequency technologies. These work together to target and destroy unwanted fat cells and regenerate the production of new, stronger and healthier collagen that gives your skin a firmer appearance.

Similar to Fat Freezing and Ultrasound Cavitation, Exilis Elite destroys the unwanted fat cells and then your body naturally flushes them away through your lymphatic system over the following weeks.

Like all the non-surgical fat reduction treatments we’ve discussed today, the Exilis Elite is a pain-free and non-surgical treatment that’s suitable for most candidates.
