After childbirth, it can take a good six months for your hormones to return to a pre-pregnancy level. During this time oestrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, oxytocin, prolactin, relaxin, insulin, cortisol and many more are trying to find their balance as your body recovers.
Our hormones have a huge effect on how our body uses or stores fat in. Some hormones help to increase fat burning whilst others can block weight loss and prevent fat burning.
Pregnancy can be really challenging on your thyroid gland and can lead to Hypothyroid which slows your metabolism and can lead to weight gain and fatigue.
Pregnancy also increases insulin resistance meaning your ability to use glucose effectively is reduced and this encourages the storage of excess energy in your fat cells.
When you are stressed, your body releases adrenalin and cortisol. These are normal hormonal responses and are needed to protect us.
The problem is, when we experience ongoing or chronic stress such as sleepless nights, looking after a new baby as well as your other children or work commitments these hormones can remain constantly elevated. This can turn off your ability to lose weight and burn off excess fat, it can even encourage your body to store fat as it increases insulin resistance.

We all know that exercise is a great way to burn calories and aid weight loss, but when it comes to a mum tum it’s even more important! But with a newborn and sleepless nights, it can be super hard to muster the energy to exercise.
That’s where NEAT comes in. NEAT stands for non-exercise activity thermogenesis and is the energy you use to perform all your daily tasks such as washing up, hoovering the floor, shopping and standing.

My advice, get up, move around as often as you can. All ways take the stairs, put the baby in the buggy and get out in the fresh air and walk in the park. Improve Diastasis Recti
Part of the problem with a mum tum is that during pregnancy your stomach muscles had to stretch and in some women separate to accommodate your growing baby. This is known as Diastasis Recti and is very common, in fact around 60% of women experience this during their pregnancy.
During pregnancy, you were limited to the types of abdominal exercises you could safely do to help keep your muscles toned. And many women give up all exercise during pregnancy because they are too tired or worried about harming the baby.
