How To Stay Slim This Christmas

You’ve spent all year working hard to get down to a healthy weight. You’ve dieted, exercised and had the latest body shaping treatments to help you get the figure that you want. If you are worried about gaining weight over the festive holidays, follow our tips on how to stay slim this Christmas.

You might have already reached your target or you might still be making progress…

Then BOOM! Christmas comes along and all your hard work goes out the window.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. With the right mindset and strategy, you can enjoy the Christmas season without piling on the pounds you’ve worked so hard to lose.

As a Weight Loss Coach, I’ve worked with men and women for more than 15 years, helping them to get down to their target weight and then maintain it long-term!

To get through the holiday season, here are our top tips on how to stay slim this Christmas, without feeling like you are missing out on all the festive cheer.

Choose Your “Treat” Meals

One of the biggest mistakes we see people make at this time of year is that they don’t just treat themselves on Christmas day! Instead of what should be a one or two day celebration, it turns into a month-long binge-fest. Resulting in unwanted weight gain, bloating and generally feeling rubbish.

Our advice is to choose the treat meals (not treat days!) that you are going to relax and indulge a little. Maybe it’s your work night out, a Christmas get together with friends and of course Christmas Day it’s self. Enjoy these meals guilt-free but make sure you have eaten healthily or maybe included some fasting during the day.

If you can, try and be extra active on the day, maybe fit in a gym workout or a walk on the day or the next day to help balance out your calorie intake.

Of course, you’ve got the key dates of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve. Whilst you might choose to relax your way of eating on these days, is it really necessary to binge on a whole pack of mince pies or a tub of Quality Street? Probably not.

By choosing your “Treat” meals in advance and eating mindfully during the day you’ll be able to relax and enjoy yourself over the Christmas season, without the worry of overeating and regaining the weight you have worked so hard to lose.

Say No To Second Helpings

Another simple way to keep your weight under control this Christmas is to have a single helping rule. One slice of Christmas cake is enough. One serving of turkey is plenty.

You can have one serving of everything you want. Christmas dinner. Pudding. Mulled Wine. But when your Great Aunt Susan offers you a second helping “because it’s Christmas” politely decline.

This simple rule is a great way to keep your total food intake under control without having to miss out on the things you love.

Don’t Surround Yourself By Temptation

The shops are bad enough, with their metre of Jaffa cakes and strategically positioned tubs of Cadbury’s Roses. Don’t make your home a huge temptation too. Keep your decorations strictly non-edible. Don’t have chocolates hanging from your tree and don’t fill a bowl up with Quality Streets, no matter how tempting that might be.

Out of sight, out of mind. If you’re constantly getting visual reminders of all the sweet treats available, then you’re setting yourself up for an unnecessary battle.

Keep Active

While it can be tempting to snuggle up on the sofa with Love Actually and a blanket, keeping moving through the holiday season is important.

Even though it’s dark, cold and miserable outside, get your leggings on and go for a run, hit the gym or show up at your yoga class.

It’s true that you can’t outrun a bad diet, but skipping your workout is a sure-fire way to fast track your weight gain over the holidays.

Our Grandparents had the right idea, every year, they always went for a walk after Christmas lunch and a brisk walk on Boxing Day morning.

Plan Ahead & Set Yourself Up To Succeed

Just like you would through the rest of the year, plan your meals and shopping in advance. Don’t buy food that you don’t want to eat and keep plenty of healthy snack options available.

Big tip: Don’t go food shopping when you are hungry!! You’ll end up with all sorts of unhealthy foods in your trolly by the time you get to the till.

Eat the right things regularly and avoid getting over-hungry. If your blood sugar drops because you’ve left it too long between meals then you’ll find it hard to fight off the Christmas chocolate cravings!

Follow these simple tips and it will help curb the Christmas cravings, so you can hit the New Year without piling on the pounds.
