coolsculpting versus fat freezing

If you’ve been looking at non-surgical liposuction treatments and have been typing Fat Freezing into Google then you’ve most likely come across the terms Coolsculpting and 3D Lipo.

CoolSculpting and 3D Lipo are two very popular non-surgical fat reduction treatments that both use a freezing technology called Cryolipolysis. Read on to find out the differences between Coolsculpting and 3D Lipo.

About CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is manufactured by the American company Zeltiq. In 2010 CoolSculpting was the very first Fat Freezing device that came to market in the USA and was approved by the FDA for its safety and effectiveness at reducing fat.

It was first approved to treat the flanks or love handles, and later in 2012, it was approved to treat the stomach.

Since 2012, CoolSculpting has introduced different size applicators that fit different parts of the body. Main treatment areas are the abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, upper arms, and chin.

CoolSculpting treatments can be quite lengthy as the device only has one applicator, meaning double the treatment time when treating multiple areas such as the love handles or inner thighs.

The CoolSculpting device has safety mechanisms built in to detect changes in the skin temperature and if the skin gets too cold the device will turn off automatically.

CoolSculpting treatments are only available at doctor led clinics, however, in reality, the treatments are carried out by aestheticians.

How Does Fat Freezing Work?

Cryolipolysis is the medical term for CoolSculpting treatments which are also known as Fat freezing. The word Cryolipolysis comes from the Greek word of Cryo meaning cold and Lipolysis meaning the break down of fat tissue.

It is the process of freezing fat cells to a therapeutic temperature. The cold temperature causes Apoptosis. Apoptosis is a process that causes programmed cell death and in this case, it is the death of the fat cells. So during a CoolSculpting or Fat Freezing treatment fat cells are destroyed.

During a treatment, the cooling technology achieves a maximum temperature of -10 degrees centigrade, however, the fat cells do not need to achieve such a cold temperature for the treatment to be effective.

Your fat cells freeze at from around +4 degrees centigrade which is higher than the freezing point of water. So when a fat freezing treatment is delivered the target temperature is controlled to ensure your blood, skin and other tissues are not affected by the procedure.

The effects of Cryolipolysis were discovered by two Harvard University students who identified that when children ate ice lollies they were developing dimples in their cheeks from fat loss. And thus CoolSculpting and fat freezing was born.

Clinical studies have shown positive reductions in pockets of fat following a fat freezing treatment, as well as proving to be a safe and effective treatment.

Results following a treatment are best seen between 8 – 12 weeks after the procedure and results are proven to be even better when having 2 – 3 treatments on the same body area.

how fat freezing works

What Happens During a Fat Freezing Treatment?

Prior to your fat freezing treatment, you will normally be weighed, the practitioner will mark up where the applicators will be placed on your body and also take some before photos.

Once you have been positioned on the treatment couch, a protective gel pad will be placed onto the area to be treated. The gel pad acts as a barrier between your skin and the device to protect your skin.

The applicator will be placed onto the gel pad and the device will be turned on. You will feel a strong suction as the fat pocked is drawn up into the device and held in place whilst the technology freezes the fat pocket.

During the treatment, you will be able to relax, read a magazine or watch TV. The treatments are comfortable and painless.

Once the treatment has completed, the device will be removed and the treated area will be massaged to aid the break down of frozen fat cells.

After the treatment, you may experience some bruising and localised numbness which will disappear over the next few hours or days.

About 3D Lipo

3D Lipo is a treatment device that was developed in the UK with the aim of offering an all-in-one solution that could target multiple concerns with just one machine. 3D Lipo is able to treat individuals for fat reduction, skin tightening, and cellulite.

The 3D Lipo device offers the following technologies for body sculpting:

The benefits of having multiple technologies in one device mean that we can treat a multitude of body concerns for women and men. A bespoke treatment plan can be designed to target each client’s specific concerns which is often a combination of problems such as excess fat, and loose skin. Whereas with a device that only offers one technology, such as CoolSculpting you are unable to offer such a complete treatment plan.

For instance:

Many Mums after pregnancy have problems with loose skin as well as stubborn fat. With 3D Lipo, both concerns can be addressed during her treatment programme. Whereas with CoolSculpting only the fat could be targeted as fat freezing does is not indicated for skin tightening.

For women troubled by cellulite,  3D Lipo offers a solution that helps to break down cellulite and smooth the skin. Coolsculpting is unable to treat cellulite.

And for men; many men have firm, round stomachs. Whilst Fat Freezing can be used to treat the stomach, it is better for treating soft squeezable pockets of fat. 3D Lipo Ultrasound Cavitation is a very effective treatment that can treat and reduce the whole stomach area very effectively.

In most cases, a combination of all the technologies within 3D Lipo is used to enhance the overall results of your body shaping treatment plan. This may include combining Fat Freezing for pockets of fat, with Ultrasound Cavitation for overall inch loss and Radio Frequency to tighten the skin.

Is 3D Lipo Fat Freezing Different to CoolSculpting?

The process of freezing fat cells is the same with both 3D Lipo and CoolSculpting. The tissue is frozen in the same way to achieve Apoptosis in the targeted area which destroys fat cells.

The results take the same amount of time with both treatments. Best results are seen around 8 – 12 weeks after the procedure.

Side effects are similar too. Following your fat freeze or CoolSculpting treatment, you may experience some mild bruising along with localised numbness of the treated area. This can last from a few hours up to a couple of weeks.

Both treatments offer different size applicators to target different body areas.

3D Lipo devices have dual cryo functions meaning 2 areas can be treated at the same time.  This cuts down on the treatment time.

For example, when treating the love handles, the dual applicators would be applied on the right and left sides simultaneously. Whereas with CoolSculpting, typically you can only do one side at a time.

With both treatments, you can treat multiple areas in the same session, for instance, many clients choose to treat the stomach and love handles. With 3D Lipo, this treatment would take approximately 2 hours, whereas with CoolSculpting this could take up to 4 hours.

Price Comparisons of CoolSculpting and 3D Lipo

There is a considerable price difference between the cost of treatments with CoolSculpting compared to 3D Lipo.

The average cost per body area with CoolSculpting ranges between £650 – £850 per treatment. A single area would be classed as the lower abdomen. So if you were looking to treat your love handles then the cost would range between £1,300 – £1,700 per session.

At The Body Clinic, the cost to treat a single body area with 3D Lipo Fat Freezing is £195. Or if you were looking to treat your love handles the cost would be £299 per treatment.

With both CoolSculpting and 3D Lipo Fat Freezing, whilst visible results can be seen with a single treatment, the best results are achieved with 2 – 3 sessions per area.

Most CoolSculpting clinics will offer reductions for multiple treatments, so it would be worth enquiring as to what offers they have available.

Treatment prices for the other 3D Lipo procedures start from £90 per session for Ultrasound Cavitation and Radio Frequency Skin Tightening.
