Keep reading to find out…
What Causes Stretch Marks?
A stretch mark is a type of scar that develops when your skin stretches or shrinks quickly and it can’t keep up. The rapid change causes the collagen and elastin, to rupture. Instead of building normal skin tissue, your body creates a thinner, weaker scar tissue that is red initially then changes to silver or white as they grow older.
There are some suggestions that genes can leave you more predisposed to developing stretch marks, but given the right circumstances, anyone could find themselves struggling with the stripes!
Stretch marks can occur on any part of the body but are most common on the hips, thighs, belly, back, arms and buttocks.
Several circumstances are commonly known as contributing factors including:
Pregnancy is probably the most common cause of stretch marks due to the heavy nutritional and physical demands it places on the body. You might notice stretch marks develop on your belly as it grows but also on your breasts, hips, thighs and lower back.
Significant weight gain or fluctuations in weight can lead to the development of stretch marks too. If your weight yo-yos, you might start to see stretch marks on the area of your body that holds most of your weight – the hips and thighs for younger women or the belly and back for men and post-menopausal women.
Some people develop stretch marks in childhood or in their teens due to the fast rate of growth. Older stretch marks tend to have a paler appearance, more of a silvery-white colour rather than the red appearance of newer stretch marks.
While stress alone won’t cause stretch marks, studies have shown that cortisol (one of your stress hormones) can weaken elastic fibres in the skin and might increase the severity of your stretch marks.
Stretch Mark Removal At Home
There’s no shortage of creams, lotions and potions out there claiming to remove or prevent stretch marks, but the science behind them isn’t so clear cut.
While keeping your skin hydrated and ensuring it has all the nutrients it needs can help keep your skin healthy, there’s no definitive studies showing that topics treatments alone can actually prevent or remove stretch marks.
But why don’t stretch mark creams and ointments work on their own?
To put it simply, they’re just not powerful enough. Stretch marks are a deep structural issue that topical creams and lotions just can’t combat alone. Most over the counter creams simply won’t be able to penetrate past the skin’s barrier to get into the dermis. Some medical-grade products do contain ingredients that can penetrate the skin and aid in the repair of stretch marks, such as hyaluronic acid. But without something to kickstart and stimulate the body’s healing process, you just won’t get the results you want. You can find out more about the differences between over the counter and medical-grade skincare in my blog HERE.
If you want to really rid yourself of stretch marks then you need something more powerful.
The Best Treatment For Stretch Mark Removal
Thanks to the innovative development of non-surgical aesthetic treatments in recent decades, we’re now seeing more and more highly effective stretch mark removal treatments appear on the market.
Microneedling is a safe, effective and non-surgical skin treatment that can reduce stretch marks and help regenerate healthy skin from the inside out.
How Microneedling Works?
Microneedling for stretch mark removal harnesses your body’s own natural healing abilities and stimulates your skin to produce new, healthy skin cells in place of the stretch marks.
Using a special needling device, we make tiny puncture marks in the skin. These tiny holes tell your body that it’s time to start healing. Blood flow increases to the area and nutrients are sent to start the regeneration process.
Because we’re using your body’s natural healing process to repair and regenerate the skin, it’s very safe and effective. Most people start to notice a difference in the appearance of their stretch marks in just a couple of treatments.
What To Expect During A Stretch Mark Removal Treatment
While the idea of putting tiny holes in your skin might sound a bit extreme, it’s actually a comfortable experience. The holes we make with the microneedling device and minuscule and an anaesthetic numbing cream is applied before the treatment commences to ensure you don’t feel anything.
Immediately following the treatment you’ll need to keep the area clean and you might experience some redness and heat that resolves in a couple of days.
